Huysum, Jan van ( 1682 - 1749) Dutch
painter, known for his oil paintings of flowers. Born in Amsterdam, van Huysum
was the son of Justus van Huysum, who also specialized in flower paintings. Jan
van Huysum painted both in oil and watercolor. His oils are characterized by
elaborate composition, lavish detail, and his innovative use of a light
background.
Jan van Huysum painted a few landscapes, but achieved an international
reputation in his lifetime with his flower paintings. He insisted on observing
details from life, sometimes delaying completion of a work until a particular
flower had come back into season. Jan van Huysum worked throughout his life in
Amsterdam.
